/ LLooking to hike into the Tustin Hills Log Cabin in the winter or another off the grid cabin? As part of our Michigan travel guide in winter, below are our top recommended survival items to make the most of your wintry stay:
1. Camping lanterns: Since our cabin in truly off-the-grid without electricity and is also in the woods, it gets pretty dark. Lanterns will allow you to play cards with friends, read a book, or just take it all in. They also come in handy during trips to the outhouse :-) This 2-pack comes with batteries and features LED's so they should be brighter than comparable lanterns.
. 2. A warm sleeping bag: Our off the grid cabin rental is heated with a wood stove, so in winter months, in order to maintain your temperature, involves getting up in the night to add wood to the stove or just letting the temperature drop a bit throughout the night. You'll want a warm sleeping bag to snuggle in up in the loft. We love that this one allows for some adjustments depending on if it's really cold or a warmer night.
3. Backpack: Our cabin is on a seasonal road, not plowed and not passable in the winter. It's also very hilly, meaning that the 1/2 mile in can be quite a hike. Since you'll want to bring in all your gear as efficiently as possible, a good hiking backpack is a must. This one has a rain cover, adjustable, breathable straps, and should fit most men and women well.
4. Fire Starters: If you're staying somewhere that requires you to start a fire for heat like ours, fire starters are the easiest way to get it going quickly and also a must if you're not experienced at starting a fire. Made of wax and recycled fibers.
5. Water bottle: Since our off the grid cabin has no water access on site, you'll need to bring water in with you. This water bottle goes one step further by including a lifestraw filter, which is handy to have with you on any rustic travel. In the event of unforeseen circumstances or inadequate water out on a hike, this device removes 99.99% of bacteria and parasites.
6. Sled: If you aren't already wondering how you'll get all your water and gear up and down the Tustin hills for your winter stay, here's a pro tip: a sled! Make is easy on yourself with this sled and tow rope
7. Head Lamp: Also helpful for your evening ventures to the outhouse. This headlamp will also be handy for hiking in if you arrive after dark - hands-free light is key! This one has LED lights and is water proof
8. Snow shoes: Helpful for your hike in, exploring the woods nearby, and just having on hand for a fun winter activity during travels and at home. This set is comes in 2 lengths and 3 colors and made from lightweight aluminum
9. Bluetooth Speaker: Without electricity, your modes of entertainment are somewhat limited, which is part of the point. After you go out on your adventures during the day and cook your meal on the wood stove, use the speaker to listen to music as you relax in the evening. This one is waterproof and comes in 12 colors. You may soon find you take it with you everywhere.
10. Power Bank: We believe off the grid adventures are about balance: take a break from the daily hustle and bustle, the tv, and the microwave, and enjoy a slower pace weekend. Get outdoors and spend increased quality time with people the matter. At the same time, put modern technology to work for you to make your time a little easier, as adjusting to no electricity whatsoever may bring challenges you haven't anticipated. Even if it's just for back up or emergencies for those who want to completely disconnect, a power bank is an effective way to charge your cell phone, lantern, speaker, and other items with 2 USB ports.
